Westerplatte is one of the most important memorials in Poland. It was here that World War II began on 1 September 1939, when the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein attacked the Polish Military Transit Depot. Despite the vast superiority of the enemy, Polish soldiers defended Westerplatte for seven days, becoming a symbol of heroism and courage.
Today, Westerplatte is home to the Monument to the Defenders of the Coast, as well as the ruins of former barracks and shelters.
