Ostrów Tumski is the oldest part of Poznań, considered to be the cradle of the Polish state. It is here that Mieszko I’s town was located and, according to historians, it was in 966 that the Baptism of Poland took place in Ostrów Tumski. The focal point of the place is the Archcathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, one of the oldest cathedrals in Poland, dating back to the 10th century.
Inside the cathedral, you can admire Gothic interiors, beautiful chapels and the Golden Chapel, where the first rulers of Poland – Mieszko I and Bolesław Chrobry – are buried. In the basement of the temple there are relics of the first sacred building and the alleged baptismal site of Mieszko I.
Ostrów Tumski is also a place full of peace and greenery, ideal for a stroll among historical buildings and atmospheric backstreets. It is worth visiting the Brama Poznania ICHOT, a modern history interpretation centre, where you can discover the history of Ostrów Tumski and its significance for Poland in a multimedia way.
