The Imperial Castle is a monumental structure built in the early 20th century for Kaiser Wilhelm II. It is one of the youngest castles in Europe and its neo-Romanesque architecture is reminiscent of medieval fortresses. Although it was originally the seat of the German ruler, it has served a variety of functions over the years – from a university to the seat of the Nazi administration to a cultural centre.
Today, the Imperial Castle houses the Castle Cultural Centre, which organises exhibitions, concerts, film and theatre festivals. Its interiors, especially the former throne room and the imperial chapel, are well worth a visit, as well as a stroll through the surrounding gardens, which are the perfect place to relax.
